General Cemetery Information
The Grand Island Cemetery is located in southwest Grand Island, Nebraska at 3168 W. Stolley Park Road. Records indicate the Cemetery was started in the late 1860's with a Mr. Thummel and Mr. Platt as owners of about 20 acres south of Stolley Park Road. In May of 1897, the Grand Island City Council approved a "New Cemetery" north of Stolley Park Road and, at this time, the City took control of the Thummel-Platt Cemetery. At a later date the GAR-Lyon Post Cemetery was acquired by the city. Record keeping prior to 1897 was quite incomplete, showing only the purchaser of the lot, and no burial information. The oldest marker found is for Sarah Shoemaker, who died July 6,1863. In 1984 the Prairie Pioneer Genealogical Society completed a directory of burials. In 1988, the edition was computerized and printed by the Cemetery which included corrections of the original and all known burials. A continuously updated burial record is on file at the Cemetery office. (Cemetery Brochure)
